The result of technology in the field of search have come a long way, from relying on the content of the meta tags for indexing and ranking a website, to relying on the quality or links and content. With the emergence of a new trend now search engines are finding ways on how to utilise such technology in order to increase internet user’s share. One such trend is the emergence or the popularity of social media networks. Social media networks such as MySpace and Facebook have gained popularity over the years and several others have followed suit. Google is seen to be tapping into this resource of internet users that they have forged ties with Facebook. The increase in the users and members in this social network site have prompted not only Google but also Microsoft to enter into an agreement allowing such search engines to index and display member’s as part of their search results.
Google started returning web pages from facebook through the Google Buzz which came under fire recently because of the fact that it displays the social media profile of those who are also members of Gmail which was assailed to be an intrusion to privacy because the profiles of those people concerned did not express their intent to be included in Google buzz. Now Google is trying it’s ties with Facebook using Google news which would release or display different trending topics and other personalised options. Apart from those mentioned there were several observations where different updates in Facebook are now being indexed and displayed in Google’s real-time results. These bits and pieces that Google is incorporating in their search results coming from Facebook means that the search engine giant is recognising the ability of the social media network to bring in traffic.
