There are so many things that businesses can (and do) do wrong when it comes to using social media.
Perhaps the biggest offense and the most common one is to believe that your customers don’t realize what you’re doing when you promote a product or a service or a business affiliate on your company Twitter account or Facebook page.
Believe me – it’s obvious. As a business, don’t get so involved in your own social media world that you forget that Twitter and Facebook have been around for a long time – heck, they made a movie about Facebook, and Zuckerburg was on the cover of Time Magazine. Don’t think people are stupid when it comes to understanding the ways in which businesses use social media. Especially if your target audience is in their twenties. Talk to them, and they could probably tell you better than you think what you can and should be doing with social media.
In fact, many of them could tell you what works – and the ins and outs and etiquette – of Facebook and Twitter better than the “social media expert” that you’ve hired that tells you that you need more Facebook advertisements. It’s not a hard and fast number, but Facebook ads don’t usually result in more than a 1% return – it’s white noise and people ignore it.
The point of social media is not to push your new product to death – to be that obnoxious commercial you see on TV that you have to switch the channel for – social media is about, well, being…social. If that isn’t a concept you can understand, then maybe you should hold off on participating in Facebook and Twitter. It’s networking with customers, getting to know them, asking questions and engaging – seeing what their honest opinion is on your product or service or company and proactively doing something about it.
If you do decide to run promotions or sales or some sort of special on your Facebook or Twitter account, be transparent about it. As I’ve mentioned – you’ll offend and turn more customers away if you treat them like they can’t understand what you’re doing, like you assume that because you’re a business on Facebook you can utilize and understand the platform so much better than everyone else. Don’t alienate your own customers. That’s bad idea number one.
And if all you do is run promotions, people will start drifting away from your social media presence – treating you like just another advertisement, and shoving you into a corner of your minds where they ignore you and your “message.” Your social media campaign just becomes white noise to a disheartened public.
To really work with social media in your company, you need to have a social media team – not just an intern that doesn’t really understand your company mission but is “good with Twitter.” You need people monitoring conversations, communicate with each other and you and make sure you have a strong, integrated front to present to the world. You need to get involved, get your hands dirty and not be afraid of losing face.
One of the most stunning examples of this is from Morton’s Steakhouse. A loyal customer (who also happened to be big CEO and have 10K or so followers on Twitter) tweeted from the airport that he wouldn’t have time to eat after he landed in his destination, and would Morton’s please get him a steak and drop it off at his arrival airport?
And you know what? They did. Even though the tweet was a joke, and not something the tweeter seriously considered would happen, it did. This is the kind of thing, as a business, you want to do with social media. Impress people. Go above and beyond, and do it consistently. Listen. Improve. Ask questions, and offer rewards.

It’s been little over a year since Twitter launched its advertisement services and according to a report by eMarketer, since the introduction of their Promoted Products offerings in April 2010, the number of advertisers using the Twitter platform have increased at a steady pace. As of June 2011, there were 600 advertisers promoting their products through the Promoted Products service, representing a significant increase over the past six months in marketers utilizing the service.

What are promoted products?
Promoted Products consist of three main areas:
Promoted Tweets: These are keyword-targeted, cost-per-click ads that are displayed in all the Twitter search results.

Promoted Trends:
These are advertisements that appear under the ‘Trend’ section of a Twitter page and are charged on a flat-rate basis. If a trend has been promoted it will feature a ‘promoted’ icon next to it.

Promoted Accounts:
According to a Twtter representaive, Twitter is using some pretty sophisticated algorithms that suggest Promoted Accounts based on criteria found the user profiles of those they publically follow.
For example, if a user follows a large amount of automobile-related accounts, Twitter may suggest that you follow @volvo, if you don’t already do so.

Are they effective for advertisers?
If the advertisers themselves are to be believed, yes and no.
- Virgin America reported a massive increase in sales as a result of their activity on the promoted products platform and, according to Asian tech catalogue Penn Olson, their promoted tweets significantly contributed to helping them achieve their fifth highest sales day in the entire history of the airline.
- According to Ad Age after forking out for promoted tweets on Twitter Volkswagen reached a 52% engagement rate after tweets promoting the launch of their new model of beetle were published on the site.
- According to Investor.com, Covario, search marketing specialists, tested the promoted tweets functionality with a client. According to them “the click-through rates were paltry.”
How are they being received by the marketing community?
It appears that the jury is out on this one. A TWTCON, oneforty survey of 110 marketers revealed that those interested in using Twitter Promoted Products was very much a mixed bag, with the responses being evenly distributed across the categories involving those who would, and would not, consider using promoted products as a marketing tool.

Our View
At present the Twitter Promoted Products platform is really a service that is limited to the big guys. The high cost of advertisements on this channel means that it’s very difficult for the smaller businesses to make any real headway.
Very little is understood about the click through rates that the adverts receive and whether smaller, unknown brands would receive the same attention that the bigger brands do.
However, Twitter clearly are trying to address some of these problems and the platform is in beta, afterall. They are beginning to utilize more geo-targeted ads that may be suitable for smaller businesses and they are looking at lower cost advertising options. Hashtags are the Twitter equivalent to keywords, they are commonly used for groups and events, but they can also be used for topics and any other subject. You will probably have seen a trending section, and this is the most talked about things on Twitter, hashtags are commonly found on this but sometimes just words appear. Hashtags are much more specific and targeted than words, as if you posted a tweet about SEO, then you could hashtag that and it would be more clear that the tweet was regarding SEO. Whereas if you did not include a hashtag, then the tweet would be less specific as the topic was not displayed.
How To Search For Hashtags
At the top of Twitter there is a search bar, so for example you wanted to find people who were talking about SEO, so you would use the hashtag #SEO, you will then be given a timeline for all tweets with #SEO in them in a real time format. There could potentially be a few promoted tweets, which are paid for advertising, but there are not many due to this being a new feature rolled out by Twitter.
How To Make The Most of Hashtags
As you can see, Hashtags have the potential to help your tweets become more noticed, this can result in more followers and also retweets depending on the nature of your post. So to make the most of hashtags, I recommend religiously including them into each tweet you post. It needs to be addressed that if you stuff your tweets full of hashtags, then the post starts to lose its’ meaning and becomes very spammy, I suggest a maximum of three hashtags in a post.

Twitter, Facebook and BlackBerry Messenger have taken a lot of blame for the riots in London and also in Manchester. The question is who is to blame, these hugely popular communication sites, or the users themselves? It is typical human behaviour to just shift the blame on to someone else. This has been applied to social networks and I believe that it is unfair to make that judgement without deeply looking into the matter.
The Riots
The Riots that are taking place in the UK this August are a terrible thing. What started out as a peaceful protest for the death of Mark Duggan has spiralled deeply out of control. What is happening is not a protest, it is just opportunistic violence. Now it is safe to say that the majority of these rioters have mobile devices and are well connected to their friends through not only Facebook, Twitter and BBM, but also through simple text messaging services and, of course, phone calls. This high level of connectivity means that rioters can organise themselves to avoid the police thus continuing their rioting activities.
Now as we all know, there are certain levels of privacy within these networks. BBM in fact is one of the most private forms of communication as BBM is encrypted due to its original uses of business communication. In the past few years BlackBerrys have become very popular with the younger population and BBM is one of the major ways in which teenagers communicate with each other, hence why a lot of conversations are pinged back and forth. In this case, BBM’s extensive privacy is a huge disadvantage for police as they cannot monetiz what is happening and have no way of preparing themselves. They’re literally in the dark on this one. Not All Doom and Gloom
In the defence of these services, networks like Twitter have contributed to astonishing events, and have even saved lives. Donnie Wahlberg found a kidney for one of his fans via Twitter – without Twitter a life would have been lost. In addition to that, James Karl Buck was imprisoned in Egypt for unjust reasons; he used Twitter to inform his family, friends and authorities. Taking these amazing acts into consideration, Twitter and other social networks have done astonishing things. Although the real question is, is it the social networking site itself, or the users? There is no yes or no answer to this one I am afraid. If there were no Twitter for example, the fan searching for a liver would have died. Alternatively, if Donnie didn’t post anything regarding the fan’s liver, then he would have died also. It is clear that none of these miracles would be possible without both social media, and users working together to pull off these extraordinary acts.
Not only in miracles but Twitter has been used to start the riot clean up hash tag, gathering the members of the community up to clean their city up and begin to recover from the riot. This also takes the strain off the local emergency services, who are struggling to cope with controlling the extreme behaviour, never mind the aftermath. There is actually more information regarding cleaning up the riots than partaking in them on Twitter and I think that definitely needs to be taken into account. In addition these sites are improving morale between the communities, which is a positive way to use social media technology. Social media can act as a platform for people who want to cause problems but are also an easy way for opponents to the violence to get in touch and start making a difference
How society is developing
Society is clearly fusing itself with the internet in such a way that the majority of some ones questions can be answered online. It has been a gradual process but the internet and people are becoming an object. As technology develops, so does our involvement with it. This will result in better access to all kinds of information, but technology will not be limited in the sense of how much it can develop. The sky is the limit and we can make anything possible.
Back to the Riots
So having explained how our society is developing with technology, it is understandable how these acts of anarchy have happened. As previously stated, it is not just the acts of the users but the networking sites have had an unconscious part in it too. Yes it is fair to say that these means of communication make it virtually impossible for the police to keep up, on the other hand social media sites have been more than happy in the past to provide needed information to stop crimes in the past, so I imagine the police will receive support in this case also.

It needs to be remembered that these social media sites are only a means of communication, they do not interact with the users any more than an update here or there, or an account ban for example, these sites are just connections between masses of users. It is not just to blame the service provider – blame those who are misusing the service.
