When it comes to domain names and search engine optimisation it is normally easier said than done. Domain names are a powerful tool when optimising a website. Say for example you wanted to rank for London Carpet Cleaning, probably the best domain name you can get would be londoncarpetcleaning.(xxx) because the keywords are in the title.

The advantages of getting a domain name with your keywords in it are that Google will give this site more weight for having the keywords in the domain name, as it must be related to this subject for the keywords to be in the domain name. Also when searching don the list of search results on Google and the other major search engines the keywords will be shown in bold. This  means that your whole domain name will be shown in bold on a search for “london carpet cleaning”.

The only disadvantage to this is that most of the domains that are like this have been taken because of this reason. If you are able to find a domain name with your keywords in it then you are extremely lucky, especially if it is a .com or .co.uk extention at the end of it. However if you can’t find your keywords in a domain name, its not the end of the world, there are many extensions left, with new ones comming out all of the time, for example: .net, .eu, .biz, .info

To try to get your keywords in your domain name, there are a few other tricks that you can try to get what you really want, including adding a – between words, for example: london-carpet-cleaning.(xxx) or even l0ndoncarpetcleaning.(xxx), here I have put a zero in rather than “o” at the beginning.

The internet is becomming more sophisticated as time moves on. Google is not a little boy anymore, rather a young man. The way that we search is changing by the day. There is now alot more to modern day searching than via the normal text search. People are now typing in keywords to bring up images too.

I have noticed over the last few months that we have had a few visitors from Google images (I doubt that these are customers in our industry, more like competitors looking to rip off a good SEO image). However for people in other industries showing up in the major search engines under an image search for their keywords might be just the ticket to success. So how do you help your website rank in the image search results of a major search engine?

ALT Tags

An alt tag or ALT attribute is a text box that would describe what the image is, this is done because the search engines can’t see images, and therefore can’t rank them on the image alone. You need to put in the ALT tag so that the search engines know what the image is in relation to. You can tell if an image has a standard ALT tag by hovering over the image, if it has an ALT tag, or attribute a small box will appear with the heading that you have chosen for that image. The search engines will then rank that image according to relevance in their results.

Personally I think that the search engines are going to push image search forward in the future, and I think it would be a good idea to push this for your website sooner rather than later, before the mass market are all competing. I said this about a few other things in the past couple of years, and so far I have been right, so this time, best not to leave it to chance. If you want some help on image searching from an experinced SEO company in the field, then SEO Positive Limited can help.

Donate to charities and clubs.

If you would like to get more for your money than just a link when sponsoring someone or donating to a charity or a club (football club) would be a good idea. You will see quite a lot of football teams are sponsored by website owners, with their website address on their kit.

Most charities will put a link on their site pointing to their donor. Links from charities are very powerful in SEO as charities are seen by the major search engines as being authority sites, so most of them have high page rank which will pass on to an sites that they are linking to. Not only will you get a link from the charity, but you will be helping a good cause with your donation. I must add here that not all charities will link back to you for donating to them.

We have many other link building tips on our SEO blogfor you to read up on. Alternatively simply call us for a link building proposal.

As you already know a major part of search engine optimisation is link building. Which is a very boring, however it is a very powerful way of getting to the first page of the search engines for your selected key terms. Because it is a search engine that determines where we rank rather than a human, we need to think like a search engine.

It is quite clear to see which links are probably paid for, and which ones are natural links. Since the search engines dont like paid links they will often discount the links or even ignore any links that they think might be paid for.

Now I understand that most people do buy links to compete in their industry, even some of the biggest, and most well known site buy links for their websites. I am just suggesting that are a a little smarter with your link building campaign than the before, or you will be caught out, and you will have wasted alot of time, and even more money.

I have chosen to post this today as I have been asked by many people over the last month or so if they can optimise for another company name or product. So this is my view.

Many of your prospective clients are searching online for other companies, by their name or for the name of a product that another company make, supply or sell. Are you allowed to use the naes of these companies or products in your webpages? Yes you are, but you must be careful how you make use of them on your website.

Many large companies are aware that this does happen and on a number of times people and companies have been taken to court over the matter of misuse of certain words on a website or optimising a website for a competitors name, so be carful. For example:

Playboy has sued website owners for using the terms Playboy and playmates throughout their websites in order to rank higher for certain key terms. Unsurprisingly Playboy won the case. This is no the only court case that has come from such work so be carfeul what you copy or borrow.

If you use product and company names to mislead your visitors or the search engines, then you could be getting yourself into alot of trouble, however you may use them in a nonfraudulent manner on your pages. For example, a price comparison site has many companies names and products on their website to help their visitors gain the best value or service, this is perfectly legal.

If your not sure whether your allowed to do something, then get some advise before you go ahead, it could save you time, money, and keep you out of trouble.

I am often asked what toolbars are good for the average Internet user to download on their laptop or PC. Its hard for me to recommend a toolbar to someone without knowing what they want to use it for. Not only that, but the toolbars (yes… tool bars, not toolbar) that I have on my PC’s and laptop are all to do with SEO, and I don’t think that they will be appropriate for certain people to try using for day to day Internet use.

I have compiled a list of Search Toolbars below for you to download and try them for yourself, maybe you can tell me which one worked best for you, and why, so when I get the question next time, I can give them your advise.

  1. toolbar.google.com
  2. toolbar.msn.com
  3. toolbar.yahoo.com
  4. toolbar.ask.com

These are the most popular search toolbars on the Internet for your average user, however there are thousands of toolbars with small niches to them, for example I have a toolbar that has a few SEO tools on it, but there are other toolbars with things like the weather on them, or the time, and also ones with a radio station on it. Your toolbar choice is your own.

When optimising a website ethically for long lasting results, the most important factor to take into consideration is time. One of the most common questions that my staff and I are asked most of all is “How long until my site is on page 1 of Google”.

No matter what industry you are in, or what keywords you are targeting, there is one thing you and all your clients have in common when looking to SEO a site, and that is, you are all prisoners of time waiting for Google and the other major search engines to index, update, and rank your site accordingly based on the updates that you have made optimising the site. Sometimes you may be lucky and get indexed as soon as the work is finished, and you might rank highly after a few weeks (I have placed people on the first page within less than a week before) but it doesn’t happen often, and I don’t pretend I can do it all the time, as it is very rare that you can rank a website in that short time. Usually i will give customers a window of between 2 – 6 months to get their websites ranked on the first page of the search engines, however it does depend on certain factors:

  • Domain Age
  • How Much SEO Has Already Been Done On The Site
  • The Website Authority
  • How competative The Industry Is
  • How Competative The Chosen Keywords Are
  • Budget
  • How Many Keywords Chosen

Probably the most important factor is, how good the SEO Company is who is doing optimisation of te website, and how dedicated they are to working for you than their other customers.

I have decided to write this post today because lately I have spoken to many people who think that just linkbuilding or just adding meta tags alone will see a website rank on the first page of the search engines.

Below are the different factors that need to be taken into consideration when conducting search engine optimisation in a competative industry, I have also added a value of how much influence each factor can have on the optimisation.

Link Anchor Text – 20%

Domain Authority - 20%

OnPage SEO – 5%

Site Age – 5%

Link Diversity – 10%

In Community Links – 20%

Link Anchor Text – 20%

Although I cannot guarantee that implementing the above will get you ranked highly on the major search engines, I can tell you that if you implement the above factors on your website you should see increased rankings, and will have a website that has a higher authority than it currently has.
